PAULINA BORGHESE BONAPARTE, as Venus Victorious, 1804-1808, after Antonio Canova. One of Antonio Canovas most masterly sculptures, widowed very young, Napoleons sister Paulina was very beautifull and highly intelligent, and she was a carefree and unprejudiced princess, she was a very modern women. Paulina insisted that Canova portrayed her as the naked Venus, this was a difficult commission for Canova, as this was the princess, Napoleons sister. Canova would need to draw upon all his great artistic skills, to portray her without accusation of public exhibitionism, which he managed to do, to the great pleasure and joy of the princess. Canovas original is in the Galleria Borghese, Rome, Italy.
