This is a winter scene painted in through an alleyway showing a rather run down neighbourhood, with a view of Scheveningen Church in the rear, the painting is clearly signed P G Vertin with the year figure of 56 (1856).
The panel is in original un-restored state, the frame is probably original to this painting and has benefited from some minor repairs, on the rear of the panel are some remains of a probably London Art Dealers label, age and condition is completely consistent with the originality of the work, which came out of a private collection in the UK.

P.G. Vertin mainly street scenes which are well known for the atmospheric use of shadow and light, as well as the detail and the people passing by.
